GMCSP Meeting - March 7, 2012 

6 to 7:30PM Sheffield Elementary School Library

-Prevention and Resilience Brainstorm
--What helped build your resilience as a child?
-Eggbert’s Risk and Protective Factors
-What is happening to build resilience?

Prevention brainstorm – what comes up when you think prevention?

-Stable home environment
-Quality time with adults
-Fix problems before they start
-Meeting basic needs
-Community involvement
-Chronic disease
-Is problem focused
-Pro-social involvement

The term ‘prevention’ is those interventions that occur before the initial onset of disorder. (Medical model)

Resilience brainstorm – what comes up when you think resilience?

-Coping mechanisms
-Bouncing back
-Healthy habits
-Self confidence and awareness
-Not problem focused
-Getting to know how to use/find support
-Stress management
-Spiritual belief system

-Resilience is the process of adapting well in the face of adversity, trauma, tragedy, threats or even significant sources of stress.

-Went through introductions and discussed what helped build our resilience as children.

-Eggbert and risk and protective factors. Got into 2 groups to do an activity to represent risk and protective factors where we read a description of a person’s situation, counted the protective factors, and use that many straws to protect an egg in a drop.

-What is happening in our community to build resilience? (Some examples)

--Director of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Franklin County, Kay Johnson, spoke about the mentorship program and its prevention benefit for youth age 6 to 18. Told a success story of a mentee going from a rough life to speaking in Boston in front of 120 people.

-Heard from Christine Bates, Director of Before and After School Program. There is now a new 4H program included. Children make the program decisions.

Before School Program: 7:30-8:30am. Technology/4H/Nutrition/Phys Ed. Breakfast is integrated. After school 3:15-5:15. Homework support and enrichment programs.

Other things:

-Nurturing Families Program
-Camp Razzle Dazzle
-Responsive Classroom
-Tools of the Mind
-Keeping Kids Safe
-Steps to respect, etc.


-Cate – Community Awards Celebration – April 25. Looking for volunteers to help.
-Donna DuSell from Career Center – Youth Career Opportunity and Job Fairs – April 4 North Quabbin.
-The Brick House – Green Jobs Training Program – Starts April 15 for 6 weeks. 9-3 Thurs. and Fri.
DIAL/SELF – March 25, Badminton Bash Fundraiser.
-Geodesic Greenhouse in the community in the future?
-BBBS – Fundraising event. March 31. Starts at noon.
-Third Place. After school program 2-5.
-After school program for Middle School math needs tutors.

-Next meeting: Wednesday, March 28th. 3:30-5pm. Location TBA.
